After a break of nearly 10 years, the eminent journalist A Ramanujam who has been pioneering Tamil films in journalism with his columns in the film dailies has returned to the field. It was in these columns, published in the Tamil dailies for over 12 years, that Ramanujam defined the mood of the Tamil film industry for a long time.
With 33 years of experience, the veteran journalist has not lost the skill of a close observer of the film industry. There are many fine lines in what he writes.
His latest issue of Nayaka, the only monthly film magazine on Tamil cinema, with a circulation of nearly 500,000, published in Tamil and English, has something like a thread running through it. At times, it sounds like a series of reflections on the Tamil film industry.
Tamil films changed culture
At other times, it is a reflection on his own sense of pride over Tamil films.
More than anything else, Ramanujam writes about the film industry that has evolved out of a very small Tamil film industry. His friends are convinced that it was the Tamil films of those times that changed the culture of the Tamil-speaking people. It is because of films like Pallavi (1940), Chal Irupathi (1944), Thenmalai (1948), Mambatti (1949) and Nadodi Mannan (1952) that the 1960s saw films like Nadodi (1961), Nallathangi (1962), Chinnappan (1962), Kannedhirey Thondrinal (1963), Vanaja (1963), Arasiyal (1963) and Sirkazhi (1963) that took the banner of Tamil films to the then new world of Hindi cinema in the south.
Classic film of Abdulla
Ramanujam believes that the Tamil film industry has a heritage of its own and is not just a copy of the Hindi or Telugu film industry. The question he asks is: what would have happened in the Tamil film industry if there was no Tamil film?

Cornerstone Hospitality Group is recommending its proposed Alcohol-Free Stores regulations be amended to ease land-use requirements for the controversial businesses.
The Corrections Corporation of America, which owns the controversial near-identical locations in downtown Denver and in suburban Colorado Springs, is the only business currently operating in the state that makes money from selling booze.
The correction industry’s group called on the state Board of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco to amend proposed regulations so that liquor licenses could be granted to alcohol-free stores under different land-use requirements.
As recently as Jan. 7, the Corrections Corporation of America was pushing for the Board to revoke the liquor license of its Colorado Springs and Denver alcohol-free stores in favor of a brand new facility. Now the giant prison corporation is changing its tune.
Marijuana advocates and a corrections industry watchdog have been pushing the Board to improve oversight of the two stores that serve the public with no alcohol on the premises. Alcohol-free stores are an unusual business that is not covered by state or federal law, said Corrections Corporation of America spokesman John Moore.
To issue a liquor license, the Board would have to
