The first feature added to AutoCAD when it was released was that users could create and edit a 3D model. The 3D model could then be saved as an AutoCAD DWG or DXF file. Before this, the only way to create a 3D model was to use a separate graphics program, such as DRAW. AutoCAD DWG stands for AutoCAD Drawing. AutoCAD DXF stands for AutoCAD Drawing Exchange Format. DWG and DXF are industry standards that are used in many of the major CAD software programs. AutoCAD can import and export drawings from other programs using these file formats.

The original AutoCAD, as well as the successor AutoCAD LT, used a raster image-based graphics system that was designed to scale up and down to any screen resolution. With the introduction of AutoCAD 2007, AutoCAD added a vector graphics system, designed to produce better quality drawings. The graphics system would only scale to fit the viewport. This is different from the raster-based system, which scales to fit the screen. The vector system uses a technology known as vector editing. Vector editing is similar to editing text, except with vector editing, you can make changes to the lines or points in your model. Vector editing is a component of the AutoCAD 2012 graphic system.

In addition to being able to scale, AutoCAD can also rotate in three dimensions. Unlike other CAD programs, AutoCAD can rotate a model around any axis. This allows you to rotate a model to see it from any angle, including upside down. You can also rotate a model on its center axis. To do this, you first place a pivot point in the center of your model. Then you rotate the model around the pivot point. This will rotate the model around its center axis.
