Autodesk began in 1970 when Charles Ponzi started a small design firm. Over the next two decades, Ponzi sold his design services to a variety of clients in industries ranging from the military to the commercial airline and chemical industries. With the invention of computers, Ponzi sought a way to distribute his design services and eventually began designing CAD programs.

Ponzi was well-known for his zany innovations and quickly developed the application, which he called Computer-Aided Drafting or CAD. AutoCAD was released in 1982 as a desktop application for microcomputers, which was priced at a total cost of ownership of $4,500. Since 1982, the application has evolved into a widely used design software solution. AutoCAD offers a broad range of features, including drafting, engineering, and technical design.

Today AutoCAD is the flagship product of Autodesk and is offered on desktop computers, tablets, smartphones, and embedded computers. It is a product of choice among engineers, architects, contractors, developers, engineers, illustrators, digital artists, and designers.

Autodesk’s AutoCAD Features

Unlike most other CAD applications, which typically run on mainframe computers or minicomputers, AutoCAD is a desktop application that runs directly on a microcomputer. This was a major breakthrough for the software industry. The desktop application also helps to reduce the CAD training curve because the application is designed to be intuitive to use, and it does not require any prior CAD experience. It was the first CAD application designed as a desktop application.

Because of its low cost, easy use, and increased speed, AutoCAD is still one of the most popular CAD applications in the market today.

AutoCAD 2017 is the latest version of the software. It has three components: AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and AutoCAD WS. AutoCAD provides the primary features for creating 2D and 3D designs.

AutoCAD LT provides some additional functionality, and is useful for creating 2D mechanical drawings for specific mechanical needs.

AutoCAD WS provides the ability to create 2D drawings or 3D designs. It also connects to Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint documents, making it easier to add notes and comments directly to a Word or Excel document.

IBM Almaden Research Center, Fremont, California, has created an ObjectARX add-on for AutoCAD drawing and presentation data exchange, called A.D.A.D. This converts the data to XML, allowing it to be read by other applications. It is based on the open source Java language with a runtime written in.NET, which supports the AutoLISP language. The XML data is treated as a set of objects, the methods and properties on which are called from the ObjectARX add-on. This approach also permits the creation of a virtual drawing, the same data is used regardless of whether the presentation layer is PostScript or PDF. The ObjectARX framework is also used by AutoCAD Online Services for a number of clients.
Interactive 3D products (such as 3D Studio Max, Maya, and Fusion) integrate with AutoCAD and leverage a plugin API to enable customizing such products by adding AutoCAD functionality.
Before AutoLISP there was Java / Net 2.1. But as mentioned above that was not meant for plugins because it was based on the browser model.
AutoCAD, like almost every software product on the market today, stores a lot of information in a database. Most of this information is often kept outside the application executable so that it can be updated as required. One method of doing this is to use SQL. This is the preferred method as it is not tied to any specific programming language and works for all applications and types of data. Most databases are suitable for this purpose. SQL is a standard interface for all these databases and most graphical user interfaces for the database allow users to manipulate data using SQL.

Painful peripheral nerve injury (PNI) has a high incidence and represents a major health problem. We developed a novel experimental model of painful PNI to test the efficacy of adenovirus-mediated gene therapy in the treatment of chronic pain. Adult C57BL/6 mice were subjected to surgical ligation of the left L5 and L6 spinal nerves (L5-L6 SNI). Three weeks later, they were injected with a recombinant adenovirus encoding enhanced green fluorescent protein (Ad-EGFP) into the lumbar dorsal root ganglia (DRG) containing their corresponding L5 or L6 nerve. EGFP expression was examined in the DRG by immunohistochemistry at 4 days after injection. The extent of the inflammatory response and the degree of nerve injury were assessed by immunohistochemistry of macrophage and myelin proteins, respectively. Pain behaviors were evaluated with the hot plate and von Frey tests at 1, 3, 5, and 7 weeks after injection. DRG injection of Ad-EGFP resulted in green fluorescence in the nerve ganglia and DRG. The extent of fluorescence was found to increase with the distance from the peripheral nerve, but the DRG containing the injured L5 nerve was more intensely labeled. Macrophage infiltration and de- and remyelination were found in the ipsilateral DRG in the EGFP-treated group. The L5-L6 SNI mice injected with Ad-EGFP had a significantly higher pain threshold in the hot plate and von Frey tests than those injected with the control virus (Ad-null), whereas the pain response in the von Frey test was reduced to a greater extent in the Ad-EGFP group than in the Ad-null group.
